- WHAT'S THE DOWNLOAD MANAGER AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
-
- Using AOL's Download Manager can be quick and fun! For Macs, the Download
- Manager is available under the File menu. For Windows users, it's available
- by clicking the AOL Download Manager's icon (that's the one that has the
- clock on top of the 3.5 disk) which is located on your tool bar. It's best
- to work with your Download Manager while you're still online.
-
- Once you've opened the Download Manager you will find a long screen with the
- following buttons at the bottom:
-
- 1. View Description
-
- The View Description button will allow you to view the description of a
- selected file. The description will tell you who had put the file up to be
- downloaded, the time it will take to download the file at your current modem
- speed and an overview of what the file is. In order for you to view the
- description, you will need to highlight the file by clicking once on the file
- in the list, then click the View Description icon at the bottom of the
- window.
-
- 2. Delete Item
-
- The Delete Item button allows you to delete the selected file or files that
- are in your Download Manager.
-
- 3. Show Completed Downloads (Mac) / Show Files Downloaded (PC)
-
- This icon, when selected, shows you the most recent items that you've
- downloaded from America Online. This window had several options:
-
- A. Get Session Status (Mac) / Show Status (PC)
-
- This button will bring up a screen showing details about the file.
-
- B. Decompress Icon (PC Only)
-
- This Icon allows you to unzip any files that have been downloaded in the .zip
- format. The decompress works best with Windows version 2.5. The file, when
- selected, will unzip in the directory to which it was downloaded.
-
- C. Download Manger (PC Only)
-
- This just takes you back to the main Download Manager screen. Macintosh users
- can simply click the close-box in the upper-left corner of the window.
-
- 4. Select Destination
-
- This feature allows you to select a destination for the files you've added to
- the download manager with the "Download Later" button. Clicking this button
- will bring up a standard "Save" window, which you can use to set your
- download destination.
-
- 5. Start Download
-
- The Start Download button begins the download process of the files listed in
- the download manager. After you click the button, you will be given the
- opportunity to have America Online automatically sign off when the downloads
- are complete! When you're ready to begin downloading, click the Start button.
-
- 6. Download Preferences (PC Only)
-
- The Download Preferences Icon brings a pop-up box up which allows you to
- select the following:
-
- A. Display Image Files on Download
-
- This tells your Download Manager to show the graphic files that you are
- downloading while they are transferring. This preference applies to all the
- graphic files that you download from any area of AOL.
-
- B. Automatically Decompress Files at Sign Off
-
- This tells your Download Manager to decompress any files that you have
- downloaded after you sign off AOL. This unzips the files into the download
- directory that you specified.
-
- C. Delete zip and ARC Files After Decompression
-
- This tells your Download Manager to erase the .zip or .arc files after they
- have been decompressed.
-
- D. Confirm Additions to Any Downloaded List
-
- The Download Manager will ask you to confirm any additions to the list of
- files to be downloaded.
-
- E. Retain Information About My Last ____ Downloads
-
- This allows you to limit the number of files for which a record will be kept.
- Selecting a smaller number of downloads will reduce the amount of memory
- required to store that information.
-
- MACINTOSH USERS: The downloading preferences are accessed by choosing "Set
- Preferences" from the Members menu, then clicking on "Download Preferences."
- Additional options for graphics are available under "Graphics Viewing
- Preferences."
-
- 7. The ? Icon (PC Only)
-
- This Icon is a quick access to the help menu. This is a help search engine
- for America Online. Macintosh users will find help right at the top of the
- Apple menu.
